Time Is the Most Valuable Asset in the Pet Industry
"We don't have time to do that."
Of all the discovery calls I've had with pet business owners, there is one response that comes up more than any other:
"We don't have time to do that."
Whether the conversation is about updating a website, implementing software, improving social media, creating training materials, documenting processes, or exploring automation, the response is often the same. After working directly with founders, owners, and management teams in the pet industry for almost four years, I started noticing a pattern.
The more conversations I had, the more I realized that most owners already knew what needed improvement. They didn't need someone to tell them their website was outdated, that their social media was inconsistent, or that their systems could be better organized. In many cases, they had already identified those opportunities themselves months or even years earlier. The challenge was rarely awareness. The challenge was finding the time to focus on them.
What surprised me was how often these digital initiatives stayed on the business's wish list. During calls, owners would talk about software they wanted to implement, processes they wanted to document, reports they wanted to automate, websites they wanted to redesign, or marketing initiatives they wanted to launch. Yet months later, many of those same projects were still waiting. Not because they weren't important, but because something more urgent always came up.
Over time, I started understanding why. Running a pet business is incredibly demanding. The day is filled with client communication, staff management, scheduling, operations, and everything that comes with caring for pets and serving their owners. Trust me I've been part of the back-end operations and is really demanding.
So most businesses are not struggling because they lack ideas. If anything, they have too many ideas and not enough time to execute them.
This is one of the reasons I believe the pet industry is gradually moving toward digitalization, automation, and software adoption. From booking systems and client portals to AI tools and workflow automations, I have seen more businesses looking for ways to operate more efficiently. Not because they want to become technology companies, but because they want to make better use of their time.
The more I worked with pet businesses, the more I realized that digitalization is rarely about technology itself. It's about creating space. Space to focus on clients, support staff, improve services, and work on the business instead of constantly reacting to it. In many ways, the businesses that embrace digital tools are simply trying to solve the same challenge I hear on almost every discovery call:
"We don't have time to do that."
And perhaps that's the real challenge facing many pet businesses today. Not a lack of ideas, ambition, or opportunities but finding the time to turn those ideas into action.
Question isn't whether your business needs a new website, better systems, improved software, or stronger digital processes.
Maybe the question is
What's currently sitting on your "we'll get to it someday" list?
If you'd like help evaluating those opportunities, feel free to schedule a discovery call.
